This article is an interview with the captain of the varsity hockey team, Freddy Gaertner. I asked him questions about this season, his experiences with this team, and questions about himself. He shares his hopes for the season and depth within the team, as well as his pregame and postgame routines.
As of right now, the varsity hockey team is ranked ninth in the state. What has been the key to this success so far this season?
“The plans we have to keep being successful is to keep on working in practice so that everyone keeps improving throughout the year. We also have everyone committed to the team fully, which really brings us together.”
The varsity team is a mix of talent from freshmen up to seniors. What do you think is the main motivation for this team as a whole?
“The main motivation for the team is definitely the idea of winning another Wick for everyone at Priory.”
The fans want to know: walk us through your pregame routine.
“I don’t have a specific pregame routine besides making sure I flush my legs before, and then I just enjoy being around the team.”
Now focusing on years past, what is your favorite high school hockey memory?
“My favorite high school hockey memory as of now is definitely last year beating Lindbergh in the playoffs.”
It’s unique to be able to play with two of your brothers. How has that experience been for you?
“Playing with both of my brothers is definitely special for me. I really feed off of them and have loved being able to play with them. This is my last year, I’m just trying to enjoy it all.”
Out of the teams that Priory has yet to play this season, who is going to be the toughest opponent and why?
“I think the toughest opponent is going to be Lindbergh, just from the standpoint of them wanting to get their revenge from last year and that they have a very solid team this year.”
As we all know, the Priory student section is the rowdiest crowd on both sides of the Mississippi. How do the fans impact the games for you and the rest of the team?
“The student section at the games is the highest motivation for me. They are easily the best in the entire state, and they really give us an edge while playing. I try to give my all for them since they spend their time watching me and the team.”
And finally, what is the end goal for this team?
“The end goal for the season is obviously to win the Wick, and I truly believe this team can do it. From our goalie all the way through the team, we have a very deep team and easily the best goalie in the state.”
I would like to thank Freddy for this interview and hope this was useful for this hockey season. Go Birds!
