In recent years, golf has been a storied and historically successful sport at Priory. As 2x State Champions and 3x Runner-Ups, golfers must live up to a higher standard this year. Unfortunately, this season has been off to a slow start. With a mix of wet course conditions, windy days, and the rust from the off-season, Ravens Golf has started 0-2 this season as well as a mediocre finish in the first tournament of the season, The Bantle.
Hosted by Saint Louis University High School, the Bantle is a hard tournament that is characterized by cold and windy weather. This year was different; a sunny and fairly calm day should’ve induced low scores for the Ravens. Chance Petri, with a 10th-place finish shooting 78, was the highlight for the Ravens. Luke Glarner posted an 83, Eddie Rothrey came into the clubhouse with an 85, I (Jack Mantovani) shot 86, and Grady Frey, the freshman, shot 89. The Bantle could’ve gone a lot better for Priory golf, but on the bright side, there is room to improve.
Our first match was on April 1, April Fools Day. The Ravens lost by 2 strokes after a not-great showing from the majority of the golf team. Again, much like the Bantle, there were bright spots. Luke Glarner shot a 38 (+2), and Grady Frey shot a 40 (+4). This match was followed by two matches that both got rained out in the coming days. Desmet and Whitfield were both rescheduled due to inclement weather. After what seemed like eternal rain, the Golf team geared up for a rematch against Westminister at Winghaven Country Club on April 7. However, this rematch did not go as planned, as the Ravens lost that afternoon.
The season is young; however, many matches and consistently improving weather could be the catalyst to a winning streak. Hopefully, the next time you read the golf update, it will come with good news.
