I have four siblings, Christere, Cristela, Christophe and Christian. My older sister, Christere, top right, studied abroad in Barbados in 1980. Forty-four years later she still lives there with her Bajan (from Barbados) husband Peter. On many occasions, some of my siblings and I have gathered together at the Island to enjoy the beaches and to escape the winter. Barbados is a former British colony that became independent from Great Britain in 1966. On the map, Barbados is the farthest island to the right of all the Caribbean islands, and at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.
Demographically, Barbados has a population of 281,995 people in a space of about 21 miles long and 14 miles wide. The island’s industry consists mostly of tourism and most of the tourists come from England, Canada and some European countries but in recent years more and more tourists are coming from the United States.
One interesting thing about Barbados, is that since the pandemic, Barbados’ government implemented a program called “the Digital Nomad Visa”, in which anyone can stay for a year or two on the Island while working remotely. The application costs $2,000 and you have to prove that you have an income of $50,000 or more a year.
While there this past winter, I met a couple from Texas who were living in Barbados with that program.
Barbados has luscious vegetation, beautiful beaches, and year-round summer weather; this makes Barbados a wonderful destination during the cold winter months.
