The PGA Tour season came to an end on Sept. 1. Anyone who watched any of the PGA events this year marveled at Scottie Scheffler and the things he accomplished this year on tour. He won 6 PGA tour events and one major, the Masters. Along with those wins, he won the Gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics for the United States. While this was a great accomplishment for Scheffler, he hasn’t become near the household name that Tiger Woods has. Regardless of if you play or watch golf, you have heard the name Tiger Woods as many consider him the best golfer to ever walk this planet.
Many people think that Scheffler has a chance to become the next Tiger Woods, and while he is a great player – the best golfer in the world right now in fact – he still has a long way to go. Scottie officially became the world number one golfer on March 27, 2022. This is a title that he has now had for 104 weeks and counting. To put that in perspective, Tiger Woods was world number one for 281 weeks, which is equivalent to 5 years, 4 months, and 22 days. So Scottie would need to be the best golfer in the world for 3 years and 5 months longer to pass Tiger’s consecutive weeks record. But this is not even the most ridiculous statistic that shows just how far Scottie must come to even reach Tiger’s level. Tiger spent 683 weeks total in his career as the best golfer in the world. 683 weeks is the same amount of time as 13 years and 1 month. This means the earliest time Scheffler could break this record is Monday, Oct. 15, 2035. To show you something to base this timeline on, the new 6th grade which is starting next year at Priory will be the graduating class of 2032. By the earliest point that Scottie could pass Tiger, these students will be into their junior year of college.
Now I am not going to deny that by the time he plays his last tournament, Scottie could be considered one of the greatest golfers ever and he may very well reign as world number one for as long as Tiger Woods. But, the chances of anyone who is reading this article right now living to see a more dominant force in the golf world than Tiger Woods are is very low.
