Football fans across the country look forward to the college football playoffs every year. It is only expected by fans that the College Football Playoff committee does their job appropriately. This year, I do not believe they did so.
The job of the College Football Playoff committee is to pick the top four teams who have proved that they are the best teams in college football. This year, the committee did not do so. Instead they picked the teams who will make them the most money and give them the highest ratings. The biggest dilemma is Alabama making the playoffs instead of Florida State.
Florida State went a perfect 13-0, ending their regular season with a 16-6 win over No. 14 Louisville in the ACC championship. They were ranked No. 4 heading into the ACC championship, so it was only logical to believe that it was a no-brainer to put the Seminoles as the No. 4 seed, or possibly higher after their conference championship win.
The one problem with Florida State’s perfect season is the loss of their Heisman-candadate quarterback, Jordan Travis. Does the committee truly believe that this was enough of a loss to push the Seminoles behind Alabama in the rankings, or do they just want higher ratings so that Alabama fans can once again watch their team play in the college football playoffs?
I believe that the loss of Jordan Travis does not prove Florida State to be worse than Alabama, and I also believe that the committee sees that as well. They just want to generate as much money as possible and receive the highest ratings they possibly can. This would have been the first time that an SEC team did not make the College Football Playoffs ever. If Alabama was left out, it would have guaranteed less viewership, which equals less money for the NCAA.
It is truly an unfortunate reality that Florida State was left out and it is an even bigger shame that the decision was truly made off of how the most money could be brought in…
