Last year, the varsity soccer team put up a valiant effort against CBC in the first round of districts. The game ended in a heartbreaking, double overtime loss to a team which ended up advancing all the way to the state championship.
With the 2023 season approaching, some uncertainty arose regarding the state of the varsity soccer program, due to the graduation of 11 dedicated soccer seniors. However, with preseason practices beginning in early August, it became apparent that with a veteran group of upcoming seniors, and a fruitful group of underclassmen, the soccer Ravens would have no trouble filling the gaps that had once posed an offseason problem. In a preseason scrimmage against a stacked alumni team, it was evident that the team’s strength came from within its midfield core consisting of Patrick Hamill ‘24, Lance Lavery ‘24, and Ethan Lewis ‘24. These players demonstrated an excellent display of skill and discipline on and off the ball.
In the attacking third, Coach Mohrmann has been experimenting with several players. Due to the large group of underclassmen on the team, this has been an extensive process that has yielded many promising prospects.
In the first matchup of the season, a home game against Lutheran South High School, the Ravens created countless scoring chances. And with an impressive debut goal from Brendan Top ‘26, the Ravens went up 4-1 just before halftime. Since then, the team has continued to push forward and currently holds a 4-2 record with our first league game approaching on Sept.12. In this highly anticipated match, the Ravens look to take down a skillful Westminster squad. This game will be pivotal in deciding whether the Ravens will take home the Metro League title for a second year in a row, a major goal the players decided upon in the preseason.
