With a decisive 11-2 punishment over DeSmet in the Missouri State Championship, the discy birds’ record-breaking season ended with a bang. From the beginning, the team knew what we wanted – to reclaim the title that we were so close to taking last year. Little did we know, the season would be filled with ups and downs. We fought our opponents in rain or shine and had some close games with CBC, SLUH and Edwardsville, even climbing back from a 4-0 deficit against Lindbergh. A big shout out to influential first year players, Micheal Mathis ‘23 and Will Azrak ‘22 as well as the second-year player and important link, Matthew Broder ‘22. Miles Herr ‘25 also stepped up big when we needed it the most, especially in the team’s first ever win against DeSmet in the regular season. Additionally, our friendly giant, Mason Karpel ‘22 was always ready to get down and dirty if it meant the team would benefit from it. Although he had to unfortunately miss some time due to a scuffle with a Parkway North sideline bench, Captain Max Herr ‘22 truly led by example this year, and was crucial to the success of the team whether he was out on the field making nasty layout Ds, or on the sideline giving non-sponsored promotions to Plant Protein Protein Shakes on the livestream. Lastly, the leader in assists, completions, catches, touches, D’s, and points played, Captain Drew Steinhubl ‘22, was an essential part of the team and will be thoroughly missed next year with his enthusiasm, constant will to give everything for the sport he loves, and most of all: his drip. Coach Mal was more than a coach. Playing the role of a father figure, he constantly gave us inspiration and confidence when we needed it. He also discovered his angelic voice, soothing the team with his new favorite song, “Rolex,” during warmups. The team ultimately (no pun intended) came together to create a forever-memorable season. Good Birds’ Disc are champions. ROLL BIRDS! CAWK CAWK!
